Areas of Expertise Academic and research interests include the psychology of concept formation in science and mathematics; methods of inquiry teaching supported by teaching of relevant cognitive strategies. Current research uses analysis of classroom teaching, structured interviews, structured observation protocols, and analysis of documents from teacher planning and student products to investigate factors affecting teacher understanding and use of inquiry-oriented methods of teaching. Employs discourse analysis of tape transcripts to study how teachers and students mediate classroom discussions to maintain desired levels of cognitive engagement.
